Occasionally, patients come to me saying their hair loss treatment isn't working. Before we assume the treatment is ineffective, we need to investigate why.
The most common reason for treatment failure is inconsistency. Minoxidil must be applied twice daily. Finasteride must be taken daily. Low-level laser therapy requires regular sessions. If you're not using the treatment consistently, you won't see results.
Another common issue is unrealistic expectations. Remember, hair growth takes time. If you've only been treating for 2-3 months, you might not see results yet. Most treatments require 3-6 months minimum before visible improvement.
Sometimes the diagnosis is wrong. If you've been diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia but actually have alopecia areata, telogen effluvium, or another condition, the treatment won't work because it's not addressing the actual problem. This is why proper diagnosis is so important.
Underlying health issues can also interfere with treatment effectiveness. Thyroid disorders, nutritional deficiencies, autoimmune conditions, and other health problems can prevent hair regrowth even with appropriate treatment.
Medications can also cause hair loss. If you've started a new medication around the time your hair loss began or worsened, that could be the culprit.
Stress and poor sleep can significantly impair hair growth. If you're under extreme stress or not sleeping well, addressing these issues is crucial.
Poor nutrition can also limit treatment effectiveness. Your hair needs adequate protein, iron, zinc, and other nutrients to grow.
If your treatment isn't working, I recommend scheduling a consultation to reassess. We can review your diagnosis, evaluate your consistency with treatment, check for underlying health issues, and adjust your treatment plan as needed.
Don't give up. Most hair loss is treatable with the right approach.
