Acne scars are one of the most common concerns I address in my dermatology practice. Many patients have tried various treatments without success, and they're often surprised to learn that laser therapy can significantly improve the appearance of acne scars.
There are several types of acne scars, and different laser treatments work best for different types. Atrophic scars (depressed scars) respond particularly well to laser treatment. These are the most common type, appearing as small indentations in the skin.
Fractional laser therapy is one of the most effective treatments for acne scars. This technology creates microscopic columns of thermal injury in the skin, stimulating the body's natural healing response. As the skin heals, it produces new collagen, which fills in the depressed scars and improves skin texture.
I've seen remarkable improvements in patients treated with fractional laser. Most patients require 3-5 treatment sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart. After each treatment, there's typically some redness and mild swelling for a few days, but this resolves quickly.
Results continue to improve for several months after treatment as collagen remodeling continues. Many patients are thrilled with the improvement in their acne scars and the overall improvement in skin texture and tone.
Combining laser treatment with other modalities can enhance results. For example, combining fractional laser with chemical peels or microneedling can produce even better outcomes for certain types of scars.
It's important to note that laser treatment works best on active acne scars. If you still have active acne, we need to treat that first before addressing scars. Otherwise, new scars will form as you're treating old ones.
If you're interested in laser treatment for acne scars, I recommend scheduling a consultation. I can assess your specific scars and recommend the best treatment approach for your situation.
